To install Starry Night Freeman Edition from the CD that
comes with UNIVERSE 6th edition, by Freeman and Kaufmann.

For Mac Classic OS:
------------------
1) insert the UNIVERSE cd

2) open the cd window (double click so you can see the file
   folders)

3) find the README file and do what it says, which is:

   drag the folder labeled Starry Night Backyard Freeman Edition
   to your hard disk (for PCs, probably drive C:)
   
   This will cause Starry Night installation to begin.
   
   Now go to 5) below.
   

For PC running some flavor of Windows:
-------------------------------------
1) insert the UNIVERSE cd

2) double click the My Computer icon to open it

3) find the CDROM icon, which should also show the label "Universe"

   double click the CDROM icon to open it

4) Find the README file.  
   Double click to open it.
   Print it for reference.
   Make sure your computer is compatible with the hardware and software
     specifications.  
   
   Your ReadMe will probably have you install UNIVERSE by double-clicking
   on the Setup.exe file
   
   Take note of where the installer places the program, and what it
   names the directory.   

   Starry Night installation will begin automatically.

5) After installation is complete, find the Starry Night ICON,
   either on the desktop or under the START-Programs pop-up menu.
   
   double-click Starry Night icon to start up the program.
   
   This first time, you will get the following sequence of dialog boxes:
   
   A) Updates dialog box
   
      Would you like to download updated asteriod, comet and satellite
      positions from StarryNight.com?
      
      At this point, it's better to get the updates later
      (step 7 below), so click "Not Now", or whatever it says.
   

   B) Home Location dialog box
      
      Use the LOOKUP button to select a city near your location
   
      Then click the "Set Home Location" button (lower right of box).


   C) Registration dialog box  (the tricky one)

      This box has 2 open spaces labeled "Name" and "Registration"
      Fill them in with this exact information:

        Name: universe
        
        Registration: yr3-bc6d-9220-8e71-f740

      At the bottom of the box are 3 buttons:
        lower left: Get Registration Number...  
        lower right: Quit
        
        lower right: OK     <-- click this button
      
      Click the OK button.  Only the OK button.
      
         Do NOT click the lower left button.
         Avoid the lower left button AT ALL COSTS.

         If by chance you manage to click the "Get Registration Number" button
         DO NOT DOWNLOAD ANYTHING FROM THE STARRY NIGHT WEB SITE
         I repeat:  do NOT download anything from the web site.
         once again:  do NOT download ANYTHING from the web site.
  
      If the registration number is accepted, the Starry Night program
      will start up.
      
      If not:
        - check Name and Registration for typos, and click the OK button 
      
      If still not:
        - click Quit and let me know immediately exactly what happened
   
6) Quit the Starry Night program.

   Save dialog box.
   
   Click "Don't Save" unless you did something special this session that
   you want available again.

7) Start the Starry Night program again.
   A dialog box will come up asking if you want to down load DATA
   from Starry Night web site:
   
   Would you like to download updated
   asteriod, comet and satellite positions
   from StarryNight.com?
   
   It's OK to download these data files; just click the "Update Files"
   button in the dialog box.

8) use your Starry Night :-)
