FUSE Phase 1 (Guest Investigator) Proposal Information
FUSE will be launched in October 1998, with a nominal three-year mission lifetime. Averaged over the three years, more than half of the available observing time will be open for observations by Guest Investigators (GIs) selected by NASA through the normal peer-review process. GI proposals will be solicited in three approximately 1-year cycles, with less GI time available in the first year, and more in each successive cycle.
On 9 February 1998, NASA will release a "NASA Research Announcement"
(NRA 98-OSS-02)
covering the first cycle of GI proposal opportunities. The GI program
will be coordinated by NASA Project Scientist Dr. George Sonneborn.
Information about the GI program can be obtained from the
NASA/GSFC website
http://fusewww.gsfc.nasa.gov/fuse.
An
The proposal process will be similar to that which has been developed
for other NASA missions including HST, and will require electronic
submission and processing. "Phase 1" of the process will
involve filling out a LaTeX (keyword-driven) template form. The LaTeX
form should be submitted directly to
fuse_prop@fusegi.gsfc.nasa.gov via email. In addition, you will be
expected to submit 12 formatted hardcopies of the proposal to NASA. The NRA
will have the details when it is released.
The purpose of Phase 1 is proposal selection only, and no budget
information will be requested. Successful proposers will subsequently
submit "Phase 2" inputs for use in actual scheduling the observations
with the satellite. Budget information will be requested by NASA in
Phase 2.
Any questions about the FUSE GI program should be directed to NASA
Project Scientist George
Sonneborn at NASA/Goddard.
