Cycle 3 FUSE Proposals Deadline was May 11, 2001!

THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

E-mail notifications to accepted proposers went out on September 14, 2001!

(See schedule of events below.)

FUSE was launched on 24 June 1999, with a nominal three-year mission lifetime expected after an initial checkout perdiod. Normal Science operations began 01 December 1999, and Cycle 2 is now in full swing.

Averaged over the three years, more than half of the available observing time will be open for observations by Guest Investigators (GIs) selected by NASA through the normal peer-review process. The GI program is coordinated by NASA Project Scientist Dr. George Sonneborn. GI proposals will be solicited in three approximately 1-year cycles, with less GI time available in the first year, and more in each successive cycle. Details about proposing for Cycle 3 are available at the NASA/GSFC website http://fusewww.gsfc.nasa.gov/fuse/. Cycle 3 proposal materials can be retrieved simply by sending email to fuseprop@fusewww.gsfc.nasa.gov with the word help in the "Subject" line.

The proposal process for Cycle 3 will be similar to that which was used for Cycle 1 & 2 and has been developed for other NASA missions including HST. This process requires electronic submission and processing and is divided into two phases.
"Phase 1" of the process involves:

1) Filling out and submitting a "Cover Page" web-form at the NASA HQ site

Please note that NASA will not activate the Cover Page site until after the NOI deadline

2) Filling out and submittig a LaTeX (keyword-driven) template form.

3) Submitting 12 printed copies of the proposal.

The purpose of Phase 1 is proposal selection only, and no budget information will be requested. Successful proposers will be requested to submit "Phase 2" inputs for use in actual scheduling of the observations with the satellite. Budget information for successful proposers will be requested by NASA directly after the Phase 1 selection process.

The schedule for Cycle 3 looks like this:

NRA Release: February 16, 2001
Notice of Intent due: March 30, 2001
Phase 1 Proposal Due Date: May 11, 2001
Announce Accepted Proposals: (September, 2001)
Cycle 3 Phase 2 Inputs due: (October, 2001)
Cycle 3 Begins: December 1, 2001

Any questions about the FUSE GI program, its policies, or its funding should be directed to NASA Project Scientist George Sonneborn at NASA/Goddard.
