Technology Note #1: GRAPHING CALCULATOR


The following instructions give keystrokes for the TI-83 Plus graphing calculator that can be used to solve excercise 1 in Student Activity #2.

1.  Enter Data For Graphing

Press . Press .

To clear lists L1 and L2:

Move the cursor on top of  the list name L1 and press  then press .
Move the cursor on top of  the list name L2 and press  then press .
Position the cursor at the top empty space in column L1 and enter the values of the independent variable, x. ( Do this by typing the number and then pressing .)
Position the cursor at the top empty space in column L2 and enter the values of the dependent variable, y.
Each row contains an ordered pair, so the lists L1 and  L2 must have the same number of entries.
 

2.  Display Data

Press  and type 9 (ZoomStat).
 

3.  Find the Best Fit Line

Press . Move the cursor to cover CALC.  Type 4 (LinReg). Press .

The calculator screen displays the values of  slope and y-intercept for the best fit straight line. Note that you could choose to fit to functions that are not linear by typing a number othr than 4.
 

4.  Display the Best Fit Line

Press .  Press  then press . (The cursor should now be next to Y1=.)

Press . Type 5 (Statistics...). Move the cursor to cover EQ. Press . (The equation for the best fit line should now appear in Y1.)

Press  and type 9 (ZoomStat).
 

5.  Return to the Home Screen

Press  then press .
